About
Salish is a 100% linen fabric produced by a Belgian "Master of Linen", a European designation which guarantees excellence. Its gutsy weight makes it suitable for many uses, from upholstery to drapery. Oeko-Tex 100 certified.
Eco Facts
We tested our fabrics, including Salish, for VOCs – the outgassing of nasty chemicals. Our results were very impressive, well below limits set by the USGBC (The US Green Building Council to allow fabrics to accrue LEED points for low emitting materials.
This test, a combination of gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry and high performance liquid chromatography, lasts for 24 hours. A piece of fabric is placed in a closed chamber. The chemicals out-gassed for the first 24 hours at a given temperature and pressure are extrapolated to predict the results for the equivalent of a room volume. Based on decay rates for various chemicals, the test predicts the results after 168 hours (the GreenGuard requirement). So based on those parameters, and the results you see below, Salish passed with flying colors (All of our fabrics passed with flying colors.)
The LEED threshold and our actual results are:
Chemical Measured | LEED Requirement | Two Sisters Ecotextiles Fabric Group #1 | Salish and Two Sisters Ecotextiles Fabric Group #2 |
---|---|---|---|
TVOC - Total Volatile Organic Compounds HCHO (formaldehyde) | .25 mg/m3 25 parts per billion | .048 mg/m3 <1 part per billion | .02 mg/m3 <1 part per billion |
Total aldehydes | 50 parts per billion or under | Less than 1 part per billion | Less than 1 part per billion |
The Fabric Name
This fabric is named after the Salish Sea, which is an intricate network of coastal waterways located between the southwestern tip of British Columbia and the northwestern tip of the state of Washington. It is one of the world's largest and biologically rich inland seas, with 37 species of mammals, 172 species of birds, 247 species of fish, and over 3000 species of invertebrates, of these, 113 are threatened or endangered. The name recognizes and pays tribute to the first inhabitants of the region, the Coast Salish.
Uses
Upholstery, drapery, apparel, totes
Specifications
- abrasion test results: 25,000 Martindale*
- care: Easy to care for, easy to love. Washable in all temperatures, but to avoid shrinkage of 12% in length and 5% in width, and to save energy, use cool water; line or air dry. Shrinkage, on cool, is 2% width/4% length. Do not over dry; iron while still damp.
- certification: Oeko-Tex 100
- content: 100% linen
- directionality: Non-directional
- weight: 16.2 oz yd2 / 549 gm m2
- width: 54" / 137 cm
