Skookum

About

Skookum is made of very tightly wound yarns of varying density and colors. This technique gives the fabric textural interest while remaining safe to use if you have pets. If your kids or guests drop something on it, it’s less easy to see.

Eco Facts

Oeko-Tex Made In Green, pending

The “Made In Green” certification is Oeko-Tex’s latest - and, we hope, lasting - attempt at addressing the health and safety issues, not just with the use of fabric; but with each step of production of the fabric. GOTS addresses each step, field to finished fabric. Oeko-Tex has introduced several attempts at a certification that addresses the safety of the producing of the fabric, not just the use of the final fabric. They have included Oeko-Tex 1000 and 100 Plus. These were discontinued.

Oeko-Tex Made In Green does address incredibly important issues such as water treatment. Fabric production requires gargantuan amounts of chemicals, water and energy. Made In Green addresses production issues. We’ll be blogging about this issue in late 2024 if you are interested !

The Fabric Name

In Chinook jargon, Skookum means a powerful spirit. The Chinook are a Northwest Native American Tribe.

Meant as an upholstery fabric, you can also use Skookum for lots of other applications - like roman shades, curtains, apparel, towels, blankets, top of the bed.
